John Painter died from wounds on 7th April, 1915, but as yet there is no information as to where and on what date he was wounded. The 1st Royal Fusiliers battalion was part of 17 Brigade6th Division and for the first nine days of April, 1915, were in the line at Chapelle d'Armentières. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
